In the end, despite the title, it's just a masked someone killing teenagers for reasons and those reasons are terribly dumb. Yes, there's a certain formula that has, and still can, work for the teen slasher genre. But that also means it can easily enough get thrown together in a half-hearted manner for a movie that only seems to care about checking various genre boxes for the sake of Netflix's "Top Picks for You" column than delivering something fresh and fun. From the killer's themed costume to the action set pieces to the actual reason the killer is killing, There's Someone Inside Your House is a haze of slasher malaise. It's also wildly inconsistent with its gimmick, messaging, and tone, wanting to be a Scream-style meta mystery, a Heathers-style high school satire, and a dramatic redemption story all at once.

They hook up, they party, they miss the killer in their midst, and then they start dying. So it goes in There’s Someone Inside Your House, same as it ever was. Makani spends much of the movie walking on eggshells, trying to distance herself from a revealing trauma, but also keeping her and Ollie’s relationship something of a secret (though they make out in his car a couple of times). Park’s certainly charismatic enough to carry her scenes, and for a while it’s easy to follow Makani as she struggles to keep a low profile. But there’s not much to Makani beyond Park’s suggestive performance, least of all Makani’s threadbare and mostly implied relationship with her sleepwalking grandma (BJ Harrison), or her cute, but unremarkable thing with Ollie. Still, the most frustrating thing about “There’s Someone Inside Your House” has to be the gulf between its characters’ stated qualities and their actual behavior.
There’s Someone Inside Your House will keep people waiting. These components all feel perfunctory, like Brice and Gayden checking boxes off a list of what they think Gen-Z teenagers will respond to. That superficiality means that There’s Someone Inside Your House has to offer something unique in the slasher department to set itself apart, and results are uneven there, too. The result is that the film never fully transcends the level of “put on in the background while decorating for Halloween” movie. At the end of the film, Makani, Ollie, and their friends head to the school's fall festival to try to thwart the killer, who they realize is going to strike there next. They arrive to find the cornfield maze up in flames, and Makani and Ollie run to confront the killer right before he kills their friend Zach's (Dale Whibley) father. The killer then takes off their mask and reveals himself to be Zach all along. Apparently he was fed up with being made to feel guilty for being a privileged white man, and is also sick of people hiding their truest selves. The originality of Netflix’s recent horror offerings is questionable, which is to say that these movies often stand on the shoulders of their genre predecessors. The Fear Street series nods so often at Scream, Friday the 13th, and The Witch that it fell short in developing an identity of its own.

With the town reeling, the next then kill solidifies the fact that the murderer is going after people with dark secrets. Specifically, secrets about the victims being purposefully awful people. You’re not onto something; you actually hit the nail right on the head.

That's because, as Perkins herself put it, the point of the story is not just to find out the identity of the killer but to see how Makani and her friends grapple with this terrifying threat and their own secrets.
